What do we know about bridges? And about building bridges? Both in a physical and metaphorical sense?
During 24H Nieuw-West, the atelier complex Nieuw en Meer—located on a peninsula by the Nieuwe Meer—will once again open its doors to the public. Visitors are invited to join the "Emsterdam Bridge Experience," designed by Roos Oomen and Timon Tamminga. This experience will lead them to three bridges, built by Maurice Bogaert (Let Us Meet in the Middle), Sander van Deurzen (Brug), and Arjen Lancel (Groeibrug).
There will be an "Art Brocante" on the premises, and in the Kantina, you can treat your soul and ears with Jazz Bites, while in KATE, LAB will be showing a selection of visually stunning films.
Admission is free, though some program elements require a donation or paid entry.
On October 12nd, during 24H Nieuw-West, Nieuw en Meer will open its doors to the public with music, art, a brocante market, and the Amsterdam Bridge Experience.
Thursday, October 4th, 5-6 PM Welcome Reception.
We are thrilled to introduce our new artist-in-residence at Nieuw en Meer; Petras LinceviČius from Lithuania.
With a multidisciplinary approach rooted in painting theory and artistic research, their practice delves into the complex themes of place, identity, and belonging within a globalized framework. Drawing inspiration from Philosophical Philotopy, Genius Loci, and Biomythography, they explore the intersections of ancestry, home, and personal narratives. By integrating diverse artistic disciplines and theoretical perspectives, their work fluidly adapts to the needs of each project. Their art serves as a deeply personal form of storytelling, weaving myth, history, and biography to offer fresh perspectives on how we perceive the world around us.

OCEANUS. A new ritual 2019 - 2021
Rituals resemble stones; they are imperturbable, unalterable and self- contained. Rituals are the exact opposite of human indefiniteness. Rituals release the participants from their daily questions and insecurities. Rituals can tame emotions without suppressing them. Rituals clasp the individual in the firm grip of the group. Rituals communicate that which nobody is able to express or understand. Rituals assuage the desire for meaning through their perfect form. Rituals give the person something to hold on to as compensation for his/her lack of ‘completeness’.
– Walter Weyns
Oceanus was an object-based performance made entirely from ceramics, developed by Erin and Gosia during a three-month residency at the European Ceramic Work Centre in Oisterwijk.
In this interactive performance, the audience was invited to connect with the phenomenon of water. Water is often taken for granted, yet the water scarcity in the Netherlands in the hot summer of 2018 served as a poignant reminder of its preciousness. With climate change, many people around the world now face uncertainty about clean drinking water.
Looking to create a ritual to show our reverence and gratitude towards water, Oceanus guided the audience past three ceramic altars: two ceramic hands, representing water as a scarcity; a ceramic boat symbolising water's role in connecting people and goods; and a bathtub, representing water in abundance.
As the audience moved from altar to altar, they held small ceramic objects in their hands, such as droplets, noses and ears, and became part of the work. During the procession, dancers performed rituals to guide the participants through a meditative experience deeply appreciative of the water in our lives.

At the start there is not something and there is not nothing. Everything is in the world, camouflaged as everything, residing around us and free for use. Only when you take hold of it you can be on to something. This is well understood by the artists of the exhibition Triple A; Nayul Kim, Daniel Hofstede and Marc Oosting.
Meet Leendert van Accoleyen. Upon Kate's invitation, Leendert is staying as Artist in Residence at Nieuw en Meer. On March 29th at 5:00 PM, Leendert's work will be on display.
