Hero Image

Nieuw en Meer, a leading Amsterdam artist collective, houses 100+ workshops/studios, significantly shaping the city's creative and ecological landscapes and enriching its vibrant cultural tapestry.

Agenda

Open ateliers 2025-09-06

The artist and creative enclave Nieuw & Meer opens its doors once a year for the now-iconic “Phoney Island Fest.”

Ever wondered what an artist’s life looks like? Many studio holders will welcome you inside, a swinging music stage will rise in the central square, and the ecologically managed grounds can be explored in all their colours during daily guided tours.

Not to be missed this year are not one, but two exhibitions. At KATE, Liesbeth Bijwaard and Jan Haak present the striking group exhibition featuring works by Nieuw & Meer artists, this year under the title “A Love Like This.”

At the back of the grounds, in Het Trefpunt, Reina van Zwoll (Gallery On The Edge) is curating a vibrant exhibition with artists both from outside and from Nieuw & Meer. Once again, the collective “After Nature” will be there for a live painting performance.

Do you want me to also make a shorter, more catchy version for a flyer or social media? That would make it pop even more.

History

Originally the Nieuw en Meer complex was a weapons and ammunition depot of Defense. The first buildings date from 1918 and were part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Until the early eighties of the 20th century the site was in use of Defense. After the last conflict in 1962 in, at that time, ‘Dutch New Guinea’, the military stores fell into disuse.

On June 25, 1988, when Marco van Basten caused a collective ecstasy in the Netherlands, the buildings at Oude Haagseweg 51 at the outskirt of Amsterdam, were squatted by a group of artists an activists from the squat at Conradstraat 11.
